Geomatics
Engineering (GE) Section is one of seven major sections of the Department
of Civil Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology in Roorkee,
India (formerly University of Roorkee). The department itself is one of
the oldest and largest in the country, having been established in 1847 at
the famous Thomason College of Civil Engineering. The GE Section has been
offering postgraduate programs leading to a ‘Surveying and Photogrammetric
Engineering’ master of engineering and Ph.D. degree since 1958. The scope
of these programs was enlarged in 1982 to emphasize remote sensing, which
also lead to the revision of the name to ‘Remote Sensing and Photogrammetric Engineering’. Recently, the name was changed to the more
acceptable ‘Geometics Engineering’. Our Master of Engineering program is
unique in the country, since it is one program that offers courses in GIS,
Digital Image Processing, Geodesy, Photogrammetry, Topographical
Surveying, Adjustment Computations, Computer Graphics and allied
subjects. The Section has excellent laboratory facilities for teaching and
research, which include GIS, DIP and Photogrammetry packages (i.e.
Intergraph products - Microstation, Geovec Office, Image Analyst, In-Road,
MGE GIS (MTA, MAI, MCSO etc.), GeoMedia Professional, GeoMedia Web
Enterprise; ESRI products – Arcinfo, Arcview: ERDAS Imagine, ERMapper;
Spectro Radiometer; Photogrammetric Plotter-Wild BC-2, WILD A8 etc.The GE
section has a highly qualified faculty, most of whom acquired their Ph.D.
from the U.K. or the U.S.
